The University of Alabama's Weeks of Welcome (WOW) is an annual tradition that marks the beginning of the fall semester. This year, the event is set to run from August 16 to October 10, with a special focus on forming the iconic 'script A' on the football field. This event, which began in 2016 as a freshmen-only affair, has evolved to include returning students as well, creating a memorable experience for all. The 'script A' formation, which will take place from 6-8 p.m. on the field, is just one of the many free events open to all UA students. The WOW initiative, coordinated by University Programs and the Division of Student Life, aims to connect students with resources, people, and events outside the classroom, fostering a sense of community and belonging. The expansion of WOW to eight weeks in 2025 has been a significant step forward, and the 2026 edition promises to be even more exciting with the introduction of the '1831 List'. Named for the year of UA's founding, this list suggests 18 events and 31 experiences for students, offering a diverse range of activities. Among the events, the 'script A' formation stands out as a visual spectacle, drawing students together in a unique and memorable way. The WOW program also includes various other activities such as Hi, Tide Day, Bama Jam, Get Rec'd, Get on Board Day, and the Blackburn Institute Annual Symposium Opening Keynote, each designed to engage students and provide valuable information and experiences. The '1831 List' events, such as Tuscaloosa-centric days, book, health, leadership, and career fairs, offer students a chance to explore life outside campus and develop essential skills. Additionally, suggested experiences like dining at Rama Jama's, attending the Saturday Tuscaloosa River Market farmers markets, enjoying arts events at the downtown Bama Theatre, and participating in campus theater and dance programs, as well as concerts at the Moody Music Building, provide a well-rounded cultural experience. The WOW program also includes recreational activities like pickleball, Mario Kart, and pool parties, as well as an interactive mystery involving Big Al, adding an element of fun and engagement. Overall, the Weeks of Welcome at the University of Alabama is a comprehensive and engaging initiative that sets the tone for a successful and memorable semester for all students.
