The South Korean government might be planning a "large-scale K-pop event" in January, and the rumors are spreading like wildfire. Korean media outlets are abuzz with the news, and it's got everyone talking.
According to the Korea Herald, the four biggest K-pop agencies - Hybe, JYP, SM, and YG - have received preliminary inquiries from the South Korean presidential office about artist availability in January. But here's the catch: while these agencies confirmed the inquiries, they also emphasized that no formal casting or event confirmation has taken place yet.
These agencies are the powerhouses of Hallyu entertainment, representing some of the biggest names in K-pop. Hybe, for instance, manages BTS, TXT, Enhypen, and more. JYP has Stray Kids and Twice under its wing, while SM oversees acts like Girls' Generation, NCT Dream, and Super Junior. YG Entertainment boasts Blackpink and Baby Monster among its roster.
If this concert materializes, it would be a historic moment - the first large-scale K-pop concert in mainland China in almost a decade! And that's not all; some speculate that this could be the beginning of a thaw in China's restrictions on Korean cultural content, which have been in place since 2016.
But here's where it gets controversial... The talk of a concert comes after a bilateral summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where they called for a "mutually beneficial cooperative relationship." Could this be a sign of improving diplomatic ties?
And this is the part most people miss: several K-pop events in China have been canceled this year. Epex, Kep1er, and Le Sserafim all had to cancel or postpone their performances due to various reasons, including "local circumstances" and "force majeure." Interestingly, local reports suggest that Le Sserafim's event might have been objected to by authorities due to the inclusion of a Japanese member, amid diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Tokyo.
