Bold grief, lasting gratitude: Katie Holmes honors James Van Der Beek after his passing. Holmes, who gained fame as Joey Potter opposite Van Der Beek’s Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram following the news of his death at age 48.
Holmes posted late Wednesday night with a handwritten note to her former co-star. Van Der Beek died after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Brook, and their six children.
Holmes began her caption with a somber reflection: “I formed some words with a heavy heart. This is a lot to process. I am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James’ journey. He is beloved. Kimberly, we love you and will be here always for you and your beautiful children.”
The Dawson’s Creek pair starred together from 1998 to 2003. In her handwritten message, Holmes expresses deep appreciation for the memories they created. She writes: “To share space with your imagination is sacred — breathing the same air in the land of make believe and trusting that each other’s hearts are safe in their expression.”
Holmes reflects on memories of adventures in youth, laughter, conversations about life, and even James Taylor songs. She highlights traits she admires: bravery, compassion, selflessness, and strength, along with an appreciation for life and the idea that life itself can be art. She notes Van Der Beebe’s achievements—building a loving marriage and a large family—as the journey of a hero. While mourning his absence, she also expresses gratitude for his lasting impact.
To Kimberly and the children, Holmes and her supporters affirm their unwavering presence, promising continued love and compassion as they navigate this loss.
