The New England Patriots face a critical playoff showdown against the Houston Texans, but key players' health hangs in the balance.
In a Friday press conference, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the injury concerns impacting his team ahead of Sunday's AFC divisional round game. Vrabel revealed that several crucial players are listed as questionable, casting a shadow of uncertainty over their availability.
Specifically, linebacker Harold Landry III, cornerback Christian Gonzalez, and running back Terrell Jennings are all dealing with injuries. Landry III, who leads the Patriots with an impressive 8.5 sacks this season, was limited in Thursday's practice, according to the team's official injury report. Gonzalez, a Pro Bowl cornerback, is cleared to play despite a concussion sustained in the previous game.
Adding a positive note, Vrabel confirmed that Khyiris Tonga will be back on the field after missing the last three games due to a foot injury. His return is expected to bolster the team.
This game also holds a special significance for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. His first NFL start was against Houston, a game the Patriots won 41-21. Maye is hoping for a repeat performance this time around.
On the other side of the field, the Houston Texans bring a formidable defense to Gillette Stadium, with a trip to the AFC championship game on the line. Vrabel emphasized the team's focus on success, especially against a team with a +16 turnover margin. The Texans are coming off a dominant 30-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, where their defense scored two touchdowns.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Texans might be without Pro Bowl wide receiver Nico Collins, who suffered a concussion. His doubtful status could give the Patriots' defense an edge against Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud. Stroud struggled against the pass rush in the previous game, fumbling the ball five times and throwing an interception. The Patriots, fresh off their own commanding performance, aim to disrupt Stroud in a similar fashion.
