Muskoka's Clear Garbage Bag Success: A Community Achievement (2026)

A bold move towards transparency has paid off big time for the District of Muskoka! Despite initial resistance, the switch to clear garbage bags has been a game-changer for waste management. Since its official implementation in March 2025, the clear bag program has led to a remarkable 38% decrease in garbage tonnage and a whopping 99% increase in green bin organics collection.

District Chair Jeff Lehman recalls, "When we proposed the idea, I thought it was a bit odd, but effective. Little did we know it would be this successful!"

But here's where it gets controversial... The clear bag requirement has also been extended to transfer stations and the landfill, and the results are astonishing. Lehman attributes this success to the community's commitment, with over 80% of transfer station customers and almost all curbside pickup residents embracing the change.

"This is a community achievement," Lehman emphasized. "Every year we extend the life of our current landfill saves taxpayers millions. Even a few extra years of capacity is invaluable due to the costs of finding and developing new landfill sites. By reducing the amount of garbage we bury, we're making a positive environmental impact, from reducing carbon emissions to minimizing pollution."

So, Muskokans, your efforts have not gone unnoticed! Your willingness to adapt has made a significant difference. Lehman concludes, "Thank you for embracing the change. Our actions today will benefit our finances and future generations."
