MotoGP: Pavesio Confirms Quartararo's Future at Yamaha is Uncertain
The Sepang Shakedown testing session was in full swing when the first transfer rumors began to circulate, suggesting that Quartararo was headed to Honda and Martin to Yamaha. This sparked a significant reaction even before the season officially commenced. Yamaha's Managing Director, Paolo Pavesio, addressed these rumors in an interview with GPOne.
Pavesio, when asked about Quartararo's potential departure, stated, 'I can't comment on rumors. Our focus is on our testing program. We've made significant progress with 10 M1s featuring a V4 engine, new chassis, and improved aerodynamics. Our efforts over the past two years are unprecedented in MotoGP history, and we've worked tirelessly on a new project while racing. That's what I can discuss.'
Despite the rumors, Pavesio emphasized that Yamaha's primary concern is their current riders. He mentioned, 'We have four riders under contract for this season, and we're halfway through our agreement with Fabio. Things are moving rapidly, and our efforts could lead to Fabio's decision to stay with us. We will discuss the future when we have a clear project vision.'
Regarding the possibility of keeping Quartararo, Pavesio said, 'I can only speak from my knowledge. I understand that everyone is discussing potential deals, but it's a complex situation with 22 riders, 5 top riders, and 5 manufacturers. I haven't received any new information from Fabio or his manager, apart from Tom's statement. I'm open to discussions when the time is right.'
Pavesio also addressed the rumors surrounding Jorge Martin's signing, stating, 'It's another rumor, and it's natural for managers to explore options. It's part of the game, but I only comment on confirmed news.'
When asked about the impact of rumors on the team's dynamics, Pavesio acknowledged, 'We're human, and these rumors create additional stress. It's our first day of a long journey, and many have worked hard. Our sport is entertainment, and I understand the dynamics, but I must protect my team. These rumors on the first day of testing are challenging but expected in our industry.'
Looking ahead, Pavesio expressed his desire to keep Quartararo, saying, 'It's impossible to predict, but I'd be foolish not to want Fabio with us next year. We've built trust over time. Last year was challenging, but we gave it our all. I hope we can continue our partnership harmoniously and relaunch our relationship. If not, we'll accept the outcome.'
Regarding a deadline for finalizing the team, Pavesio concluded, 'It's premature to discuss deadlines. We're halfway through our contract. It's illogical to set a deadline before the first GP, but I understand the market's rapid changes and the potential domino effect in the top rider market.'
